An Ode to Nancy Luce
Nancy Luce and my ADORABLE nephew Crixus |
I've already written about why this cause is close to my heart but it is important to Nancy because she experienced this horrible closer to home. In 2004, her father (Ben's Grandfather), Gene Bolduc passed away after having been diagnosed with Alzheimer's years earlier. I didn't meet Ben until 3 years later but over the last 5 years I have had the privilege of getting to know Gene through the stories and memories that his family has of him.
This disease spreads far and wide. So many people have been touched by it and know what it feels like when memories are stripped from someone they love. I can't imagine what someone goes through as their memories begin to fade and everything becomes unfamiliar. There is something so terrifying about this disease that is unique to any other ailment. Typically having the people you love around you to support you in your time of need is a comfort. With Alzheimer's all of the comfort you'd feel is replaced with this scary feeling of nonrecognition.
A coworker of mine also lost her father to Alzheimer's. The song "You Don't Remember" by Lani Nash was written in honor of her father and the memories her and her 5 sisters still cherish. I had the pleasure of meeting Lani today when she came in with my co-worker and treated us to an impromptu concert at the office. I told her about our participation in the walk and Nancy's amazing efforts because I know how much the cause means to her. She wrote "You Don't Remember" in the hopes that it would spread awareness of the disease and in my small way I want to help her accomplish that.
Thanks to everyone who has donated to our walk so far. We really do appreciate the support! If you've wanted to donate but haven't had the chance to yet, we are still accepting donations on our secure Team Got Diamonds page or if you'd prefer to mail a donation, click here to download the form to submit with your generosity. And of course, if you want to join the fun on September 21st at the walk in Augusta, then support us with your company and join our team!
