Wicked Skinny
It is baking season and yesterday I passed along a couple of cake recipes that are "healthy." Let's be honest. Cake ain't healthy no matter how you look at it. It's as healthy as it is a breakfast food (you know, with egg in it and all). So what's a girl to do? Turn to substitution?
Precisely. The last time I had success at this, I was able to bake some great things and cut a whole bunch of calories and guilt inducers out of my baking. My favorite substitution I found back then was apple sauce in place of cooking oil. I loved this trick because it actually makes cakes and breads more moist. It improved every recipe I try it with except for brownies. I was never able to find a good brownie recipe that didn't taste like it was a "healthy brownie."
So I went out looking for more of these little tricks I can try in my baking because deer hunting
season is coming right up and it happens to coincide with my baking season. There is something magical about cranking my baking playlist (yes, I made a baking playlist....) and creating delights that make my house smell amazing! I found a great website that I'll be visiting often that had a whole list of these substitutions. The most notable in the list was the very first one. You can use black beans instead of flour cup for cup. Supposedly this works great for brownies. I can't wait to try it and see if it actually works.
The site is "Picklee." It isn't just food and it isn't just fitness health-nut stuff. Site founder, Jordan, has compiled DIY projects, before and after pictures of projects she's done, crafts, furniture restoration and recipes galore. She describes herself as a girl that likes nice things without the budget to buy them. I have always loved this philosophy and it is a perfect collection of things I'm interested in. The recipes are posted in a really great way. When you hover over a picture of the recipe's final product the name of the recipe comes up and weather or not it is a "skinny" recipe. There is even a cocktail drink menu called "Libations." My favorite was the Wicked Skinny Sunset Cocktail. I'll be trying that soon. There is also a sangria but no low calorie wine (Sorry Michelle! Still looking for that and you'll be the first to know).
Check out the recipes and if you're crafty, check out the other stuff too. Between having good substitutions for classic recipes I already have, I'm going to have so much fun trying the recipes on Picklee so stay tuned for updates on the edible results.
