High Fructose Rats
I had a boyfriend once that was a little nutty about fitness and weight gain and loss. One of the things I always remember him talking about was how bad high fructose corn syrup is for the body. I remember checking food labels because he refused to eat anything with HFCS in it. After we broke up I honestly didn't really give it another thought because, at the time, there wasn't conclusive evidence that it really was any worse for you than regular sugar. This was 2006. Flash forward to 2010 and scientists discovered that maybe it really IS worse than sugar. Flash forward to 2014 and suddenly I am thinking about it again.
The article I found describing the studies seems to suggest that they did, in fact, prove that HFCS causes rats to gain more weight than those that had the same calorie intake in sugar compared to HFCS. It doesn't discuss why this is but the ex was a physicist and I remember him talking about the molecular structure of the sucrose vs fructose and how it had something to do with the bonding of the whatever that bonds to other stuff and makes you fat... Admittedly I probably should have paid more attention to those rants... Are you seeing why this relationship didn't really work out?
I wanted to talk about this now though because I am continually trying to find ways to cut down on things that I can do without. Whole Grains? Check. More veggies? Check. Fruit instead of cookies? Check. But once you give up the easy stuff, cutting down gets a lot harder. I can't say for sure that HFCS is really as bad as some will lead you to believe but what I do know is that cutting down on any form of sugar can only cause good things to happen.
I also ended my membership to Weight Watchers today. I simply wasn't making use of the tools and it seemed to be a waste of my money because I wouldn't use it they way they intend. I felt too busy to be glued to it like I should have been. Being a member did make me think more about what I put onto my plate though and I think that it was valuable. I may give it another crack when I can muster the gumption to use it faithfully.
I am off to do MORE shoveling... I'm thinking I really do love Jillian Michaels more than Mother nature at this point.....
