Insert Catchy Fad Diet Name Here
I have never been a proponent of dieting because my feeling is that the progress you make by reducing your diet to things you would not generally eat isn't sustainable because it is only temporary. When I started to change my life I knew that if I wanted it to work this time I had to make permanent changes not temporary ones that would result in faster gratification.
Sustainable life changes take time and any diet plan that doesn't take that into serious consideration is simply a gimmick. There is one I saw recently called the 21 Day Fix that made me laugh pretty hard because it employs good techniques to help you make permanent life choices but is too scared to tell people that so they market it as a 21 Fad Diet that you should really just repeat every 21 days and because it focuses on portion control it doesn't deprive you of things you don't want to give up permanently. It uses color coded containers that help you manage your portions and has workout dvds that keep your intake and outake in line with what you're eating. Its a really great idea but I'll be damned if I will pay money to do it. With a little help from pinterest and the rest of the internet you could invent your own 21 day fix.... which gave me the idea to do just that... sort of.
I am going to implement a container system and my workouts are pretty well taken care of so I wanted to use something else to help me stay focused on actionable things I can measure to improve my progress. I made a list of 10 things that I know will help me lose weight if I do them consistently. At the end of the day I total up the number of points I earned for the day and it gives me an idea of where I'm at. Here's the list:
Walk
Do Alternate Muscle Exercise
Eat Salad/Veggies
No Fried Food
Had Active Lunch
Drank Water
No Sugar
Wore Fitbit
Achieved Calorie Deficit
Submitted Blog Entry
I get a point for each of the things I do. I know every day I won't get all 10 but if each day I try to get as close to 10 as possible then I will have an easy way to help keep me accountable. If I can't understand why I'm not losing weight all I'll have to do is go back and look at the week (I log each day's point tally on my calendar) and see mostly 5s to understand I need to do more.
At the end of each blog entry I'll include this number instead of what day in my journey it is because that doesn't really need to be a focus anymore. The game has changed from focusing on just doing something every day to fine tuning what I'm doing to lose the rest of the weight. Then the game will change again to maintain mode.
